margin: 2px;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/hello/103/2967/400/DSCN2766.jpg" border="0" />
I'm never gonna look at this picture the same. Wow, before the focus was on how funny it is that Josh Lehr is looking at the camera on my scooter in the background and that homeless guy with the long hair can't seem to figure out what is going on. Now its on Benji's face. Did you ever notice how awesome his smile was? On the day we took this picture, Benji and I were in Tulsa feeding homeless people in a park with some other OWU students. We actually got to witness to quite a few people that day. At one point the two of us decided to take a walk, and we walked for more than an hour around Tulsa. I have some fun videos of us sliding down some hand rails in a parking garage. That day just takes on a whole new meaning now. He was one of those guys that was by far the most fun when it was just the two of you. You never really saw the real Benji 'til you got to spend some quality time with just him. About a million memories are popping into my head, as I sit here crying my eyes out, of times that he and I sat in the van on our way to some camp or church somewhere out in the middle of nowhere (we traveled on a band together for our school) wondering what we were in for that week. We usually spent most of the time playing rook in the back of the van (we took out the back two seats and called it the love nest), while Chris was in the front driving. Another cool memory was a time that Benji and I did create-a-date together. We took two of our friends horse-back riding, to chili's, to the fire department, and went scuba diving in the freezing cold OWU pond for buried treasure. I just spent the past hour putting together a photo album of Benji and I can't believe what a fun guy he was. He was also probably one of the most talented guys I have ever known. This guy was good at everything, even skiing. Oh my word, Benji is never going to play sax with me again. I cant even tell you the joy that it gave me to hear him playing sax. He could take an ordinary worship song and turn into a beautiful song. Wow, I would give anything to be able to play one more song with him. I think there are some songs that I will just never play again, because I just cant do them justice without have that sax in there. Did you see the way he built that loft in his dorm room? That was awesome! He and his roommate pretty much built a second level in their room to double it in size. I wonder who is going to get to use that next semester. He had so much potential. I guess God just wanted to use that potential in heaven. He must have needed a really good sax player for a band he is putting together up there. Play away Benji. Now you can really play to the Lord. I bet worshiping him is much better in person. We can do it together again someday. I can't wait. I cant wait to sing with you again. I love you man. I can't type any more; I can't see the screen. My eyes are too blurry from wiping them too much, lol. I love you man.

Softball Champs

Well, Monsters Inc. Sojourn continues to show me that I definitely have a lot of learning and growing to do, but I am ready. As many of you know I am a pretty emotional guy anyway, but the other day I just broke down balling, because I felt so overwhelmed, scared, and excited. I can't wait to start my ministry, but at the same time I feel so inadequate. If it were not for the fact that His strength is made perfect in my weakness, I would be in huge trouble, but Im not because He is able, and I know I am in His will.

Extreme Makeover Home Edition

As many of you know, OWU has been involved this past week with helping out Extreme Makeover Home Edition build a house for a local family here in Bartlesville. The family is a Christian family whose father passed away last year. He was a pastor for many years, and as you know there isn't much money in that occupation normally. As a result the family was left with very little. They lived on a farm with a very beaten up trail home, and they needed help. Extreme Home Makeover and OWU stepped in to provide that help. I?ll be honest, going out to that site and standing for hours was a little grueling, and filming the same scene over and over and over again was really start to annoy me, but the end result was awesome. I?ll be honest, the first day I went out there and got a little mad at all the Hollywood hype, because I wanted it to be more about helping the family and less about Extreme Home Makeover, but I soon realized that if it were not for all that hype, that family would not be sitting in an awesome new home today. If Hollywood is paying the bills, give Hollywood the hype they want while helping others. Thanks Extreme Home Makeover.

Age of Empires III

Ok I'm not a gamer, and I ussually don't like wasting time. You see I have seen and heard some things lately that have made me a little mad. We call our faith one of love. We say the greatest commandment is to love one another, but it seems to me that we are not living up to this ideal. Instead I am seeing a church with an us vs. them mindset. Do we think we are going to change people by warring against them? Take this whole homosexual argument for example. As Christians we are supposed to hate the sin not the sinner, and just about every Christian would say they do that. But we dont show it. Why has the sin of homosexuality become so much worse than all the other sins? Why is it so much worse to have sex with someone of the same sex than to get a divorce and remarry? Jesus never said, I hate homosexuality, but he did say, I hate divorce! Why would I be looked down upon so much if I were to have sex with another guy, but not if I were to have sex outside of married with another girl? OK I realize that statement was a little ridiculous, but it is valid. Sin is sin, but for some reason this sin has become unpardonable. I am not about to accept the idea that homosexuals deserve rights as homosexuals like they are a separate race or something. I am not minimizing the wickedness of this sin, but I love those who call themselves homosexuals just as much as I love someone addicted to pornography or as much as a good Christian friend. I wont lie; there is something about homosexuality that gives me the chills, but I so does the idea of someone killing someone or cheating on a test or even worse on their wife. The point is that I am ready to attempt to fulfill the great commission, and the only way to do this is to love people. There is a huge group of unreached people (the homosexual community) that I have determined to reach.

And God said it was GOOD.

CHEEZ-ITs the best snack ever. I have been working on it forever now, and it's not even that great. I wanted a website that wasn't really flashy, but had all the information it should have and stuff. Today is Christmas, and I am so incredibly happy to be on break. Last Semester was probably the hardest semester ever. I think I took on too much. I got very overwhelmed. Anyway, I have been very busy this break working on stuff for the church. Things are going great. We have more than fifty people meeting on Sundays now in my brothers (the pastor) house. I haven't blogged in forever, because I have never been so overwhelmed in my life. I am too busy to eat, breathe, and sleep. I have six tests this week! I'm goin nuts though. Witness is done traveling. It was an awesome time, but I am glad it is over, because it was taking up a huge amount of time. I'm goin home every other weekend for Sojourn. We have been averaging about 40 people (about half of that is kids) at our core group meetings. It's awesome. I can't wait 'til we launch the first public service. Scary Huh? No I'm just kidding these guys are absolutely awesome. On the left is Andrew Deibert; he is quite possibly the coolest guy on earth. He is the men's RD (Resident Direct), and he is awesome at his job because he is one of those guys that can come up with awesome ideas and has the personality to attract people to those ideas. He is one of those guys who everyone wants to be friends with. He rocks. In the middle is Kelly Dongell. She is new to OWU this year as the women's RD, and boy does she have an magnetic personality. Who wouldn't want to be around her? She has an awesome way of making you feel good about yourself. Thanks Kelly. And last but now least is Eddy Shigley, the Dean of Students/Vice President of Student Life (pretty much that means he is really important). I can honestly say that watching this awesome man of Gods lifestyle has helped me to grow immensely. Not only does he take the time to listen and care for me and the rest of the students on campus, but he also has seven children. Wow, he blows my mind. Dr. Piper and the board definitely new what they were doing when they hired this group. OK I guess I can quit sucking up now. (These are my bosses.) No but seriously, they rock.

Music Speaks

This weekend I witnessed something that makes the above statement very true. I was at a concert in Souix Falls, South Dakota, and there was a crowd there of about 200,000 people. Luis Palau, an awesome speaker who many of you have probably heard of, got up on stage and began to deliver the salvation message. I stood there in utter amazement as he struggled to keep the attention of the massive crowd. His message was a very simple, Billy Graham style message, but the people just wouldn't listen to him. As he concluded he gave an altar call, and quite a few people gave their lives to Christ but not as many as you would expect considering the number in attendance. After the message Third Day began to play. The concert was amazing, one of those concerts which you leave wanting to go play the CD (message) to everyone in the world. At one point I was jumping up and down to the music, and at the peak of one of my jump I looked back and gasped at the sight of 200,000 people worshiping. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. I was almost in tears. God was definitely loving this. Then that song ended, and the next song began. This song began with a simple piano/vocal duet. The words to the song were basically the same words that the crowd was ignoring earlier during the Luis Palau message, but this time the crowd was silent and fixed on the words of the song. I was absolutely amazed. MUSIC SPEAKS. I thank God for giving me a passion for music, and I pray that He will use me to convey messages in the same way Third Day did that night.

Upper Scott Unite

Upper Scott is my dorm. We had a total blast. It was in South Dakota, and there are some awesome people there. I think the band sounded pretty good. We had an electric guitarist (Dave) step in and play with us for the week. This picture is of tug-of-war in a mud pit. We also played volleyball in the mud. It was awesome. I Thessalonians 2:17-20 says, "17But, brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you. 18For we wanted to come to you-certainly I, Paul, did, again and again-but Satan stopped us. 19For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 20Indeed, you are our glory and joy." This is how I feel. I have pored out everything I have into these teens, and they have taught me even more than I taught them. I will remember some of these kids forever. These past two summers, I have grown more than any other time in my life. Thanks guys, I love ya.

Putting it in perspective.

Yea I'm small. I guess that is the problem I am facing right now. I cant begin to explain how I feel. Right now my band and I are in Flagstaff, Arizona. Last night we went to the Grand Canyon, and I had a worship experience to beat all worship experiences, and I didnt even have my guitar. I climbed out to a rock that stuck out into the canyon and began to cry. I know Im a baby, but if you have ever been to the Grand Canyon you understand the feeling. It reminded me just how huge God is. It reminded me just how small I am. It reminded me that God can do immeasurably more than I could ever dream or imagine. It reminded me just how incredibly absurd the evolution theory is. If God didnt create that, then I am serving the wrong God, because there is no question in my mind that the designer of that piece of art is without a doubt all-powerful. I woke up this morning (in an awesome hotel), went downstairs, ate an awesome breakfast, read my Bible, checked my email, and prayed while sitting in the hot tub. This morning I feel like I want to go love on and witness to every person in the world. Dont ever forget just how awesome God is. P.S. I think I am going to add the above picture to the list of possible first CD covers.

Witness team leader?

OK, this is my team leader. I LOVE THIS TEAM!

The Naked Guy

I went to the Nelson-something museum with my brother and girl friend the other day. Yea six of the coolest people on Earth. Last summer we lived together, traveling in a van across the US spreading the good news of Jesus Christ and Oklahoma Wesleyan University. It was awesome. Imagine getting payed to do what you love to do. Yea that is what I did. Not only did we get to play lots of music, we also got to be cabin counselors. I never realized how mych sharing your faith can impact you. These teens changed my life. They taught me that I want nothing more than to spread this good news (about Christ) to as many people as I possibly can. There is nothing more important. My passion is not music. My passion is using music to reach people. Oh yea, that is a cool realization. Well, last summer is over. I am doing it again this summer. I am traveling with a whole new group of people. The only people coming back for a second run at it are Bendy (She's the red head in the middle. Her real name is jenny.) and I. Witness '05 is going to be awesome. The new group is probably more musically gifted, and I pray that it is as passionate about the spiritual issues as Witness '04. Let's go Witness. We can make a huge difference!

The COW and FROG

I had an asignment in Sociology to go to do something out of the ordinary and document people's reactions. What would you think if, while walking into Wal-Mart, you witnessed a cow and a frog sitting on a bench? Well, Jessica, the frog, and I decided to find out. Would you ignore the fact that anything is out of the ordinary? Would you stop and ask what is going on? Would you act annoyed; or just smile? I would like to place these possibilities into two categories: friendly and unfriendly responses. As a Christian whose main objective in life is to positively influence as many people as possible, it would be very beneficial to distinguish what it is that moves individuals into one categories or the other. If I can move more people into this friendly category, I can influence more people in a positive way, and that would be worth the effort.
As we were preparing for the experiment, my assumption was that most people would ignore us or act annoyed, but to my amazement, the majority of those who passed by were friendly. Most smiled or chuckled, said hello, or even stopped to ask us what we were doing. Because fashion is such an important issue in our world today it is nearly impossible to pass by a display like this without noticing an abnormality. With this realization at the beginning of the experiment I was very uncomfortable, but the longer I sat there and the more people began to warm up to us, the more I began to feel comfortable with the situation. The spotlight is a lot more kind when your audience is accepting.
I concluded from our research that our breaking of this background assumption had a positive response because the unordinary aspect of our apparel was friendly and innocent. Being outside of the norm caused people to make an instant decision on whether they would have a positive or negative reaction and there internal reaction reflected on there external response. In conclusion I must ask myself, if being out of the ordinary in my apparel will allow me to more positively influence people then why am I not wearing a cow costume everyday?

Tulsa Excursion

I along with about thirty of my friends have taken three trips to Tulsa to hand out clothes and feed the homeless. We set donated food and clothing out in a park and the homeless flood in to consume everything we offer them. After all the supplies are gone and we have witnessed to as many people as will lend us an ear, we leave. As we drive home I am forced to contemplate why exactly I do these acts of service. Am I helping them by babying them so that they are not forced to go out and apply for a job? As I think about these people who live in a cardboard box or on a park bench, I cannot help but think that it must be at least mostly their fault. Is it seriously that impossible to get a job in this country? I do feel sorry for them, but let’s just say sympathy is not on the top of my spiritual strengths list. I did feel horrible that I got to go home to my nice, warm dorm room and they were forced to remain on the freezing streets, but there must be a way out of it. I just applied to stuff envelopes for a little extra money. Could they not do that? Nevertheless, I will continue to visit them there on the street, because every trip I have had the opportunity to share my faith with at least one of them and that is enough to guarantee my presence at the next trip to downtown Tulsa.

Just Name It?

Help me out. You see Eric, my friend whose name I will not mention, is the youth pastor of the youth group that I lead worship for. When I saw how cool his Blog is I decided to make my own to be like him. My name is Mike. I am 20 (I’ll be 21 March 30th), and I attend college at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. I am a worship leader who loves nothing more than glorifying God through everything I do. If I actually get addicted to this Blog thing (like Eric is) you will realize that I have some really abstract thoughts, and I will try my best to confuse you with as many of them as possible.
